IN BRIEF
DETROIT — The United Auto Workers union is quickly approaching a deadline to reach new contract agreements with General Motors and Chrysler.
The current four-year contracts expire at 11:59 p.m. today. GM and Chrysler workers can't strike if an agreement isn't reached by then. Instead, the UAW will likely choose to extend the current contracts, as it did with Ford on Tuesday.
Negotiators are considering profit-sharing instead of hourly pay raises for longtime UAW members as well as signing bonuses and increases in health care costs.
