Saxonburg clears Mingle, Knoch homecoming parade for same night
SAXONBURG — The night of Thursday, Sept. 18, will be a busy one for the borough’s Main Street when it hosts both the fifth Mingle on Main of the season and the annual Knoch High School homecoming parade at the same time.
The parade will serve as a prelude to the Knoch Knights’ homecoming football game against the New Castle Hurricanes on Friday night, Sept. 19.
According to borough manager Steven May, all parties involved — including the borough, Knoch School District, and the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department — have agreed to the arrangement.
“Everybody’s on board,” May said.
The route of the parade will take marchers from the borough municipal building on West Main Street up to Pittsburgh Street before they stop at the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company grounds.
May said the conflict was unavoidable because Knoch High School had only four home games to schedule a homecoming for — a run of three consecutive games between Sept. 5 and 19, plus the home finale against West Mifflin on Oct. 17.
Although both events will be taking place on Main Street, the parade and the Mingle will not collide with each other, as they are taking up adjacent sections of the street. May assured residents that Main Street will be able to handle both events at once.
“Main is always blocked from Pittsburgh up (to North Rebecca Street) for a standard Mingle,” May said. “There’ll be plenty of standing room at the intersection and it will be safe for everybody.”
The parade will be followed by a traditional homecoming bonfire, to be held in the parking lot area of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company on Horne Avenue.
The Mingle on Main, scheduled to start the same night at 5:30 p.m., will be the last for this year. It will feature a tribute to outgoing Saxonburg Mayor William Gillespie held at 6 p.m. at the South Butler Community Library.
