Butler County is going to borrow $15 million to pay for a new 911 emergency call system and finish interior work in the government center annex.

The county commissioners on Wednesday discussed approving an ordinance next week authorizing the borrowing.

The county in December awarded a nearly $10 million contract to Motorola to install the new 911 system.

The system needs to be replaced due to Motorola no longer providing hardware or software support for the current system after 2018.

The county constructed a new office building adjacent to the government center on Diamond Street in 2015 for the purpose of housing human services.

However, the new building’s second level, which is above the building’s interior garage, was left unfinished to save money.

The commissioners also authorized bidding drainage and sidewalk work at the county courthouse.

The estimated $500,000 project includes fixing water damage to the basement floor and some walls of the courthouse as well as rerouting rainwater from entering the building.

Due to timing issues related to required legal advertising, the board voted during the agenda-setting meeting rather than delay the project by waiting for next week’s voting meeting.
