CHERRY TWP — Clay Kohlmeyer’s tenure as head football coach of Moniteau got off to a rousing start with a 17-0 win over Coudersport.

“I love it for the kids,” Kohlmeyer said after the game. “They deserve it.”

For the Warriors faithful, it marked the first time they could celebrate a win since Aug. 31, 2023, when they defeated Elk County Catholic 34-14 — a stretch of 18 straight losses. However the rest of the season goes for the Warriors, they have already improved over their 0-10 season from 2024.

“This is one of the first times at Moniteau that I actually helped the team win,” said Warriors running back Brendin Sankey, who rushed for 146 yards, caught a touchdown pass and was the breakout offensive star of the game. “It feels awesome. We worked so hard during camp, and it means a lot.”

Sankey, who was the Warriors’ starting quarterback last season, switched over to running back and handed the QB role to freshman Weston Cook.

“I love it,” Sankey said of his new position. “My coaches and players around me, they’ve helped me so much.”

The game was a scoreless defensive struggle for nearly the entirety of the first half until the Warriors finally broke through with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cook to Sankey with only 8 seconds left until halftime. The play was set up with a dramatic and unexpected 34-yard pass from Cook to Aiden Kern.

Throughout the first half, both teams had several chances to break the deadlock which were snuffed out by untimely turnovers, penalties or both.

The Warriors got the first break of the game when they recovered a Christian Driskell fumble on the second play of the game, but failed to capitalize on it. Behind Sankey’s running, they came close to the red zone before two costly holding penalties drove them back, and Cook was sacked on fourth down.

From then, the game turned into a classic defensive struggle, as neither team seemed to gain any traction on offense.

“I was getting worried there,” Kohlmeyer said. “We were a half-inch away from breaking a bunch of plays there.”

The Falcons had a scoring chance when Preston Ayers returned a punt to Moniteau’s 15-yard line, but on the very next play, Liam Allison intercepted a pass from Falcons quarterback Colemen Freeman in the end zone.

The Warriors thoroughly dominated after halftime, barely allowing Coudersport’s offense onto the field. Moniteau broke the game open late in the third quarter with a long, sustained drive that took nearly the entirety of the quarter and exhausted the Falcons’ defense. Both Sankey and fellow running back Aiden Shakley gradually moved the ball down the field until Cook scored on an 8-yard scramble to make the score 14-0.

The Warriors iced the game with a 23-yard field goal from Kern with 5:34 remaining. The drive initially seemed to end in a 9-yard touchdown run by Sankey, but it was called back due to holding.

Moniteau will try to build on its opening win when the Warriors hit the road to take on Port Allegany on Aug. 29.

“If we keep running the ball like that and chewing up the clock, we should be able to stay with anybody this year,” Kohlmeyer said.
