Butler native Jane Wymer returning to US Senior Women’s Amateur Championship
VERONA — Jane Wymer is enjoying quite a week on the golf course.
Wymer, 58, of Penn Township, won her 13th Butler Country Club women’s championship Tuesday. She followed that up by winning the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur qualifier Wednesday at Longue Vue Golf Course.
Wymer shot an 8-over 80, topping the 10-golfer field. She won by six strokes over runner-up Carolyn Creekmor. Those two advance to the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship in Portland, Ore., at the end of September.
“I play golf every day,” Wymer said. “Some good things are bound to happen.”
This will be Wymer’s second consecutive appearance in the Senior Women’s Amateur. She reached the match play round of the event last year. She’s been a member of Butler Country Club for 29 years.
“The (Longue Vue) course played long today, 5,690 yards,” Wymer said. “These events are about par-golf for women. I don’t get many birdies.
“I never check or look at the leaderboard when I’m playing. My goal is always to finish at even par. I was 6-over through 16 and double-bogeyed 17. I looked at the board when I finished the round, was surprised to see myself in the lead. ... ‘It was like, wow, looks like I’m going to Portland.’”
Wymer will compete in Sunday’s Butler Eagle County Amateur at Lake Arthur Golf Club. She won the women’s portion of that event four times.
