JACKSON TWP — Heavy rain Tuesday night and Wednesday took its toll on roads throughout the township.

A sinkhole swallowed up one road. Floodwaters washed away part of another one.

At the peak of flooding between 6:40 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday, sections or all of 17 different roads were closed, said Jackson Township Police Chief Terry Seilhamer.

“The roads were closed because of flooding, debris or trees down,” he said.All but one of the affected roads were eventually reopened. The exception was Williams Point Drive, a private road off Gudekunst Road.“The flooding caused a sinkhole overnight that went all the way across the road,” Seilhamer said of the road that serves three businesses. “The sinkhole caused the road to collapse.”Toll Gate Road was also damaged, but not as badly. The flooding washed away the berm at the edge of the road, police said.The road remains open to traffic but will need repairs.
