CONNOQUENESSING TWP — More than 100 people gathered into a shelter on the Butler Farm Show grounds to celebrate the life of Corey Comperatore, a Buffalo Township firefighter who lost his life there one year ago.

The Comperatore family hosted a private ceremony Sunday, July 13, for friends and family to share stories about Corey Comperatore.

To start off the event, Pastor Jonathan Fehl from Cabot Church delivered an invocation and spoke about Corey Comperatore’s ability to walk through life gracefully.

“He was given the grace to carry on with his home life, his work responsibilities and to continue serving the community, to the fire department and serving in the Army Reserve, and of course, the grace to play with dolls,” Fehl said, referencing Corey Comperatore’s daughters, Allyson Comperatore and Kaylee Comperatore

After Fehl spoke, Helen Comperatore took to the stage to recount her experience of the rally and first steps in her healing process. She also took the time to explain why she decided to host a celebration of life on the one year anniversary.

“(At the time) I was expected to write something, to say goodbye to the man I was just with for 34 years,” Helen Comperatore said shakily. “I couldn’t come up with anything because I could barely speak. I could barely say a word. It was not what that man deserved. He deserved so much more.”

Alan Cottrill, the man who created a bronze statue of Corey Comperatore that was later unveiled at the event, then gave a short explanation behind its creation. He explained how he used technology to replicate details like Corey Comperatore’s boots.

After the statue was revealed and the family gathered to admire the work, Corey Comperatore’s mother, Karen Bird, alongside Kelly Meeder and Dawn Schafer, Corey Comperatore’s sisters, took to the stage.

“(The Butler Farm Show grounds) is not just a place where my brother was murdered,” Meeder said. “It’s a hallowed place. It’s a place where evil took my brother, and it’s also a place where Jesus Christ... took my brother home. That’s what this place is, and I’m honored to have his memory here.”

Comperatore’s daughters each then took a turn sharing memories of their father.

“He was my first phone call when I was in my first car accident and a pretty serious one at that,” Allyson Comperatore, the elder of the two, said. “A police officer came up and asked if I was okay, and my first words were, ‘Yeah, I’m okay, but I can’t find my phone and need to call my dad.’”

Kaylee Comperatore talked about his demeanor.

“He would tell you that he isn’t a hero; he was just a husband and a father who did what he was supposed to do,” she said. “But I know if he could talk to us, he would never stop bragging about his face being plastered all over the country.”

Other speakers at the event included Dennis McKenna, a man who handed down a Bible to Helen Comperatore; George Scott, Corey Comperatore’s brother-in-law; Scott LoBaido, an artist who painted Corey Comperatore; Kip Johnston of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company; and Chris Hollihan, Corey Comperatore’s coworker.

U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th, also took to the stage to read a prepared statement from President Donald Trump.

At the end of the speeches, Helen Comperatore said the day had lived up to her hopes for a proper sendoff for her husband.

“This is what I wanted,” Helen Comperatore said. “I feel so much better giving him this goodbye.”
