UMass tops Duquesne in overtime

PITTSBURGH) — Ricky Harris had 22 of his 29 points after halftime and Massachusetts overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to snap a three-game losing streak with a 84-80 overtime win over Duquesne Thursday.

"He's done that a lot for us, coming through when we need him" said the Minutemen's Anthony Gurley. "He always fights and never gets down on himself."

Harris, who was averaging 26.6 points over his past five games, missed eight of his first 10 shots but hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer then went on to shoot 7-for-11 in the second half.

Gurley had 16 of his 20 points after halftime for the Minutemen (9-15, 3-7 Atlantic 10), who had 60 rebounds — the first time they had that many in a game since Feb. 28, 1996, when the Marcus Camby-led Final Four team had 60 against St. John's.

"I haven't seen 60 rebounds in a while — at least not with our team," Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg said. "That's really a sign of making effort plays, and when we do things like that, we're a good team."

Massachusetts had lost eight of its previous nine and 10 of 12 coming in. The Minutemen shot only 29 percent from the field during the first half while allowing the Dukes to shoot 48 percent.

After halftime, Massachusetts shot 51 percent and Duquesne 32 percent.

The Dukes (12-12, 3-7) scored the game's first nine points and built an 18-6 lead. They led by as many as 16 on three occasions, but the Minutemen began a 26-8 run when trailing 50-34 to take their first lead.
