Fire contained at Scott Township asphalt plant

Fire - DME

A fire broke out Sunday, July 6 at an asphalt plant owned by Shields Asphalt Paving on Plain Grove Road in Scott Township, Lawrence County, but emergency crews quickly put a stop to the fire before anyone was injured.

The fire was reported around 11 a.m., with multiple reports of “black smoke” emanating from the plant.

“When we arrived on scene, white smoke was showing,” said Mike Rodgers, chief of the Scott Township Volunteer Fire Department. “On-scene, the fire was contained to a transfer pump between two million-gallon liquid tar storage tanks.”

No one was injured in the fire, although it did eventually lead to a small brush fire near the storage tanks. Rodgers said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

“It took us about 10 minutes to get under control,” Rodgers said. “We were on scene approximately 30 minutes.”

Aside from the manager of the plant, no one was at the site at the time of the fire, as it was a Sunday afternoon.

In addition to Scott Township, volunteer fire departments from Slippery Rock and Volant responded, as well as Slippery Rock EMS.
