Mary Ida Shannon, 94, of Butler died at 1:37 a.m. Thursday at Butler Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of former Butler physician, Dr. Dean R. Shannon.

Born Feb. 15, 1913, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Edward Milton and Ida May Edwards McFarland.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Butler Medical Auxiliary, the Literacy Club, the University Club of Pittsburgh, the Chatham University Alumni Association and was a former member of the American Association of University Women.

Mrs. Shannon was a graduate of the Pennsylvania College for Women, now Chatham University, in Pittsburgh. After graduation in 1935, she secured a position in the registrar's office at Carnegie Mellon University and later became registrar and recorder at the Pennsylvania College for Women until her marriage to Dr. Shannon Aug. 15, 1942.

Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Bonnie L. McMullen, Ph.D. and her husband, James, of Oxford, England, and Dr. Mary Ann Portman, M.D., and her husband, William, of Pittsburgh; a son, Dr. David Dean Shannon, D.M.D., and his wife, Susan, of York; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Dean R. Shannon, M.D. who died April 1, 1995; and by two brothers, Dr. Paul E. McFarland, M.D., and Dr. Edward M. McFarland, D.D.S.

<B>SHANNON </B>— Friends of Mary Ida Shannon, who died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the <B>Young Funeral Home</B>, 127 W. Jefferson St. Services will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with her pastor, the Rev. David Panther, officiating.
