PITTSBURGH — A manager of a downtown Pittsburgh McDonald’s restaurant is due in city court to face charges he sold prescription drugs illegally at the restaurant.
John Eckard, 48, of Pittsburgh is charged with selling anti-anxiety drugs to an undercover informant last month, then referring the same man to a customer who also sold the informant drugs. Police say both drug sales happened in the restaurant's restroom.
Allegheny County Stephen Zappala Jr. says police have made 100 arrests in and around the fast-food chain’s three downtown restaurants since October.
Zappala threatened to close down the restaurants when Eckard was arrested last week, until McDonald’s officials agreed to pay for improved security at the stores.
IRWIN — A district attorney is investigating whether two candidates are using falsified nominating petitions to challenge a western Pennsylvania district judge.North Huntingdon District Judge Douglas Weimer says one of his opponents doesn't live in the township, and has listed the address of a storage garage as his home.Weimer says the other candidate hasn’t lived in the township for a year, which is required to run for the office. Records show that man registered to vote in Westmoreland County on March 3, but last voted in neighboring Allegheny County in 2004.
HOLLIDAYSBURG — Police in central Pennsylvania have issued an East Coast bulletin for a man charged with riddling his ex-girlfriend’s home with 21 shots from an assault rifle.Police in Logan Township, about 85 miles east of Pittsburgh, say 33-year-old Joseph Olecki shot up the woman’s home after she ended their 10-year-relationship about 10 p.m. Saturday night.Police said today Olecki remains armed and very dangerous. He’s originally from Scranton.Olecki faces attempted homicide and other charges. Court papers say he has six stolen assault rifles with him and told the woman he plans to “take out as many people as possible” before he’s caught.Police say Olecki may be driving his black 2005 Ford F-150 pickup with Pennsylvania license plate YTV-7328.
NATRONA HEIGHTS — Five children are recovering from various injuries a day after falling over a steep hillside in a county park.Harrison Township police aren’t identifying the children rescued Sunday afternoon from Harrison Hills Park, a 500-acre hilltop park that overlooks the Allegheny River.Police aren’t sure if the children fell off a trail or whether it was partially eroded and gave way. The children tumbled some 75 feet down the hillside facing the river.Police say at least one child had a cell phone and dialed 911. Police used global positioning information from the phone to find the children, whose ages weren’t released.Police say none of the injuries is believed to be life-threatening.
CLAYSVILLE — A Western Pennsylvania woman is recovering from burns to her legs in a house fire that killed 10 show dogs the woman owned.Donegal Township police say 67-year-old Dorothy Digby is at UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh suffering from smoke inhalation and burns.A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire which was reported about 6 p.m. Sunday.Digby lived in the home with her granddaughter, who was attending a dog show in New York when the fire occurred.It was not immediately clear what breed of dogs were killed in the fire.
