Man's record no quick read

His sentencing set this month

Ralph Skundrich is due to be sentenced in Butler County court later this month.

But don't count on it.

A convicted felon, Skundrich, 38, has been on the loose since Jan. 29 when he jumped bail while under house arrest in Greensburg.

The Middlesex Township man has several pending drug and burglary-related cases in Westmoreland and Allegheny counties.

Skundrich's rap sheet is no quick read.

In Butler County, he was convicted in 1993 on felony charges of selling marijuana in Penn Township, and served a year in state prison.

He was arrested in January 2002 after a search by Middlesex Township police uncovered $23,000 in stolen property at his home.

The property, including a mink and leather jacket, flatware, crystal and artwork, had been taken in a theft at a Pittsburgh home. Nearly all the stolen property was recovered and returned to its owner.

Skundrich pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property, and in December 2002 was sentenced to pay a $250 fine and $1,400 in restitution.

And in his latest case here, a Butler County jury on Nov. 18, 2004, convicted Skundrich of weapons and drug charges and receiving stolen property.

The charges stem from his December 2002 arrest by Middlesex Township police who, after searching his Pittsburgh Road home and vehicles, found stolen property taken in a burglary at Vallaha Pools and Spa in Pine Township, Allegheny County.

Police had obtained several search warrants against Skundrich after suspecting him in several burglaries in Butler County and northern Allegheny County, according to court documents.

Officers seized thousands of dollars in property stolen from the Pine Township business, including pool-related equipment, power tools and a laptop computer.

Police also found a loaded Glock pistol in the console of one of Skundrich's cars. The .45-caliber handgun had been previously reported stolen by the owner, who lived in Florida.

Additionally, the search uncovered prescription painkillers and sedatives and injectable steroids, according to court records.

Skundrich faces between 3½ and 12 years in state prison for his conviction, according to Pennsylvania sentencing guidelines.

He is scheduled to appear before Butler County Judge William Shaffer for sentencing at 9 a.m. March 30.

However, Butler County Assistant District Attorney Kristine Demarco, who prosecuted Skundrich at last year's trial, is aware of the defendant's fugitive status, and is anticipating a continuance.

"There's a court order for him to appear," she said. "But I'd be surprised to see him."
