Lisa & Rena
I agree with you both on a lot of points. I think everyone should have a drug test with their yearly physical and that employers should do random drug tests more often.
As far as the food stamps, my husband had a serious operation and was out of work and then placed on permanent disability (both to his and my dismay as he is a hard worker and didn't want this). Well, we got food stamps for about 2 months the whole time he was off and I had to fight to get them. I had been through a nasty divorce over 10 years ago, but there was still a piece of vacant land sitting that my ex wouldn't sell. Well, guess what? That pc. of property kept us from getting a lot of help. And while you may be thinking it, no I wasn't the cause of my divorce - my ex decided the grass was greener on the other side after 20 years of marriage. My point is that while we got the food stamps for those two months, I still used my coupons like I always did. Yes, I bought snacks, but I also had lots of chicken and veggies and nutritious stuff as well. But, you would be surprised at the people who look down on you when you use the food stamps (or now it is a card - much easier). I was so thankful to be able to get groceries I didn't care about the stares. But, as Rena and I said, yes there are so many who abuse the food stamps.
And strange as it may seem, Rena was right, this particular person buys an awful lot of pop and lil smokies with her food stamps. I did actually take this particular person shopping a few months ago to try to get her into the habit of buying productively and logically, but it didn't stick. And I am definitely with Rena on the ability to purchase soap, detergent, etc. with the food stamps as it is just plain stupid to have to do without essentials, but you can buy beef jerky, etc.....doesn't make sense.
How about the HUD thing, do you know how much most of the HUD landlords receive for rent? Anywhere from $700 to $900 which is more than my mortgage payment!
