Crews respond to late-night rollover crash with fuel spill in Butler Township

Multiple fire crews and the county hazmat team responded Thursday, May 17, to a rollover crash with a diesel fuel spill in Butler Township.

Crews were dispatched around 10:30 p.m. for a one-vehicle rollover crash on Pittsburgh Road in the area of Decatur Drive, according to Butler Township Volunteer Fire District Chief Mike Schmidt.

Schmidt described the vehicle as having the front of a pickup truck with a large utility box on the back. The truck landed on its side and began spilling about 50 gallons of diesel fuel, he said.

The truck driver was uninjured and the air bags did not deploy.

Schmidt said fire crews carry about five bags of absorbent material similar to cat litter for spills and Butler County Hazmat Materials Team 100 brought about a dozen more bags to absorb the spill.

Crews were on scene for about two hours cleaning the spill. Other responding departments included Butler Bureau of Fire, Butler Ambulance Service and Butler Township police.
