Position switch no big deal for Freeport's Conjack

BUFFALO TWP - As a junior, Kiel Conjack was one of the WPIAL's most electrifying receivers last year.

He caught just 24 passes to lead Freeport, but averaged an amazing 26.8 yards per catch.

So what can the 6-foot, 165-pound senior do for an encore?

Play quarterback.

With the graduation loss of Luke Westerman, who moved on to Slippery Rock University, head coach Bill Dillen was looking for an option.

"I kind of figured it would happen," said Conjack. "When I sat down with Coach Dillen this summer, I told him I didn't mind; whatever was best for the team."

Dillen said the idea isn't out of the ordinary, at least for Freeport.

"We've done that before," said Dillen. "We've taken receivers and made them backup quarterbacks."

And the notion actually makes a lot of sense, Conjack said.

"I think it helps," he said. "You know the routes, you ran the routes. You do the little things to help you complete the passes.

"As long as the team wins, I'm OK. As long as we get the W," Conjack added.

Last season, Conjack completed the only pass he attempted for 12 yards as Westerman completed 88-of-181 passes for 1,694 yards and 13 scores.

The receiving trio of Conjack, Jake Scott and Kory Micholas had 69 passes for 1,495 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Scott has graduated and is now at the Naval Academy, and Micholas will most likely become Conjack's top target.

Micholas will be at the slot position, so he could get a few carries as well.

To Dillen, Westerman will be tough to replace, but Conjack brings some great skills to the table.

"Kiel's assets are his speed and athleticism. He's been a part of two WPIAL track championships and the kids like him," he said.

"Kiel gives us a dimension. Kiel's not Luke, but he'll do what he can do," Dillen added.

"I think we're about the same," said Conjack. "Luke is a better passer. We probably won't have as many deep balls as before."

Dillen also will be looking for receiving help from seniors Chris Plocki (6-4, 180), Jake Lassinger and Brad Naedele.

"Kory and Kiel will get the majority of the snaps, but those guys should get in there too," Dillen said.

As fellow receivers last year, as well as cornerbacks on the defensive side, the duo definitely has a rapport that should help.

"This is Kory's third year so I trust him," said Conjack,

"I'll be looking for Kiel," said Micholas.

Micholas (5-10, 160) caught 22 passes for 376 yards (17.1 yards per catch) and four touchdowns.

He won't have Westerman throwing the ball, but has faith in Conjack's abilities.

"We're still set at receiver," said Micholas. "Losing Luke will hurt, but not as much as it could."
