Homicide suspect will be evaluated

Psychiatrist to examine city man

TIONESTA, Forest County — A psychiatrist will evaluate a Butler man accused of fatally stabbing his former fiancee and her boyfriend in April.

Warren-Forest County President Judge Maureen Skerda on Friday ordered 38-year-old Scott A. Black to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he’s competent to stand trial.

Black is in the Warren County Jail without bail, accused of killing Marcelle I. Edwards, 42, and Donald L. Shay, 43, of Leechburg, Armstrong County.

Black is charged with two counts each of homicide and aggravated assault.

In response to a motion by Black’s attorney, public defender Todd Woodin, Skerda ordered the examination to determine Black’s competency and “to determine if (Black) was legally insane at the time of the alleged occurrence,” according to her court order.

State police said Black shortly after midnight April 27 showed up at Edwards’ mobile home in Green Township, about seven miles east of Tionesta, and attacked Edwards and Shay.

Edward’s 15-year-old daughter, who lives at the home, told investigators she saw Black holding a “black handle knife with a curved blade,” court documents said.

Black allegedly stabbed Shay at least 20 times, mostly in the back. Police said he stabbed Edwards once in the neck.

Edwards’ daughter moments earlier had fled to her grandmother’s house nearby for help. When troopers got to Edwards’ home at 1:21 a.m., they found both victims dead.

Shay’s body was on the porch just outside on he front door. Edwards’ body was in the kitchen.

Police immediately began an extensive manhunt for Black, who drove away in his pickup following the killings, authorities said.

Hours later, troopers captured Black when they spotted him in neighboring Kingsley Township, not far from where he kept a pop-up camper trailer.

Investigators believe jealousy could be a motive in the slayings. Black and Edwards had a longtime relationship and at one time were engaged. The couple broke up in late December or January, authorities said.

Friends said Edwards and Shay began dating in February. Shay had only recently moved in with Edwards.

In the days leading up to the killings, police said, Black had sent repeated threatening text messages to Edwards and Shay.

Meanwhile, Black is to be formally arraigned Wednesday in Forest County Court. At that time, he could learn if Forest County District Attorney Elizabeth Ziegler plans to seek the death penalty against him.

Neither Woodin nor Ziegler returned telephone calls this morning.
