King Cones Castle statue blown over, broken in storm

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — There was one high-profile casualty from the vicious thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon, April 29. A 22-foot roadside ice cream cone statue at King Cone’s Castle on Evans City Road, was blown over and cracked as a result of high winds.

By Wednesday morning, the statue was lying on its side in front of the ice cream parlor, surrounded by caution tape.

King Cones owner Katelyn Gavinski, whose family has owned the establishment for 26 years, says that it will take “a couple of weeks” for the giant fiberglass cone to be repaired and put back upright.

“It fell over, but it also broke part of the cone as well, so they have to fix it with fiberglass,” Gavinski said. “When we lifted it up today, it was cracked a little bit at the ice cream part. It’s repairable, but we have to repair it and then put it back onto the concrete pad.”

According to Gavinski, the incident occurred around 6 p.m. Tuesday, although she herself wasn’t there at the time. While a security camera was pointed in the direction of the statue, no footage was captured of the statue actually falling over.

“I think our power went out when it happened,” Gavinski said. “So on our cameras, it was upright and it was not even storming. And then it just cuts to a terrible storm, and the cone is down.”

While this won’t affect the hours of operation at the medieval-themed ice cream parlor, Gavinski does expect people to notice and point out the fallen statue.

“I’m sure people will point it out,” Gavinski said. “I’m sure people have, because they're usually quick to point out if something seems off.”
