Six candidates in primary for seven West Sunbury council seats
Six candidates are seeking Republican nominations the May 20 primary for seven positions on West Sunbury Borough Council.
Since no Democratic candidates entered the primary, the candidates are likely to appear on the November election ballot.
Incumbents Gregory Ferdinandsen, Sue Carothers and Jack Grindle are running for three of four open four-year positions. No candidates are seeking the fourth four-year seat. Incumbents Michael Ferdinandsen, Edwin L. Young and council President Joy Berteotti are running for the three two-year seats. Incumbent Robert Wolford is not seeking re-election.
Gregory Ferdinandsen
Gregory Ferdinandsen, a two-term incumbent, borough native and resident, said he is retired from working in internet technology.
He cited his experience on council as his qualification for office. He said he remains interested in the borough, and wants to help and serve the community.
Michael Ferdinandsen
Incumbent Michael Ferdinandsen is a borough native and resident, and retired salesperson.
Edwin L. Young
Young, a funeral director and longtime incumbent who was born and raised, and lives in the borough, said his experience as a funeral director and work for the county coroner’s office qualifies him for anther term in office.
Sue Carothers
Carothers, a six-year incumbent, said she moved to the borough in the early 1980s from her native West Virginia, and retired from U.S. Office of Personnel Management in Boyers.
Jack Grindle
Jack Grindle, who has served on council since 1982, not long after he moved top the borough in 1979. He is retired from his job with an engineering consulting firm.
His employment experiences working with numerous municipalities in various phases of government and understanding of the borough’s financial challenges as well as the challenges of dealing with county, state and federal regulations make him a qualified candidate, he said.
Joy Berteotti
Berteotti said she is a longtime borough resident who has served on council for many years. She said she wants to continue working with council to plan, budget and accomplish community goals and projects.
Gregory Ferdinandsen: If re-elected, he said he wants to maintain the borough’s low tax rate and will strive to keep the borough’s small town environment.
Michael Ferdinandsen: He said he running to maintain continuity on council and to serve the community.
“Everyone has a duty to serve in some capacity,” he said.
His goals if elected are to keep the tax rate low, expand the tax base and improve borough as needed with fiscal responsibility.
Young: He said the borough needs help and he and his family have a long history of community involvement.
“There’s not many people left her in West Sunbury. I’m just supporting a little town,” Young said.
If re-elected, he said he wants to keep the borough running and keep up with the times.
Carothers: “When I worked for Uncle Sam, I was a benefit specialist. I handled peoples’ retirement,” Carothers said.
If re-elected, she said wants to see borough projects, especially street improvements, completed.
Grindle: Grindle said he is seeking re-election because he was taught to give back to the community and public service is a good way to do that.
If he is re-elected, he said he will spend conservatively, promote unity, seek and apply for grant money to help finance public safety and improvement projects.
Republican Mayor Edwin L. Young Jr. is unopposed in the primary. Lucinda Grindle, a Republican, and Berteotti are running unopposed for inspector of elections positions and Republican Kimberly Speer is unopposed for judge of elections
