Cyclist dies in crash

Motorcycle hits carriage

SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County - A Mercer County man was killed Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle struck the rear of a horse–drawn buggy and then crashed into another motorcycle on Route 208, state police said.

Kenneth McFarland, 57, of Sharon died in the 12:55 p.m. crash that seriously injured the other motorcyclist.

Police said McFarland was eastbound on a 1998 Honda Shadow and traveling down a hill when his motorcycle slammed into the back of a horse and buggy, also headed east on Route 208, less than one-half mile east of Spring Road.

The motorcycle fell onto its left side and slid eastward into the path of a trailing motorcycle driven by Lester Kline, 37, of New Castle.

The front of Kline's 2005 Honda VTX 1300S ran over McFarland's cycle and it also fell onto its left side, police said.

Both motorcycles slid about 155 feet before stopping in the westbound lane. Neither McFarland nor Kline was wearing a helmet.

Mercer County Deputy Coroner Dr. Charles Zeigler pronounced McFarland dead at 2:02 p.m.

Kline was taken by ambulance to United Community Hospital in Grove City before being flown by medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was listed in serious condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Kline's wife, Melissa, 36, of New Castle, a passenger on his motorcycle, who was wearing a helmet, was treated for minor injuries at United Community Hospital.

Roman Coblentz, 31, of New Wilmington, who was driving the buggy, and two passengers, a 12-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy, were not injured.

Springfield Township and Grove City volunteer firefighters assisted police with traffic control following the crash, which remains under investigation.
