The Butler YMCA of the Butler County Family YMCA launched its 2004 Annual Support Campaign on March 3.

John Chamberlain, campaign chairman, said this year's goal is $50,000, which will be used to remodel the Washington Street building's recreation center.

He said pre-campaign pledges totaled $11,486.

Chamberlain announced the recreation center will be officially renamed the Youth and Family Center and will serve youth, families and adults. The new center will enable the YMCA to do a better job of providing outreach programs and after-school programs for youth as well as providing social space for adults during the day.

Larry Garvin, chief executive officer of the Butler County YMCA facilities, said by redesigning the existing space, the YMCA will be able to add a gaming area, including pingpong, billiards and board games. Also included in the renovation will be a climbing wall, about 24 feet high, a computer lab, lounge seating and a large multi-purpose space for events.

Work on the center is expected to begin in late April and be completed in June.

The support campaign will run through March 31. Anyone interested in contributing to it or learning about the project can call the YMCA at 724-287-4733.
