Rock closing with a challenge
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock is looking to extend momentum. Bloomsburg is looking to make history.
The two teams have separate agendas as they prepare to meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in a PSAC regular season football finale at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The Rock (6-4) bids farewell to nine seniors — kicker Kurt Brackman, defensive linemen Jack Charles and Jeff Thompson, offensive linemen Jesse Buck and Austin Fedell, running back Akeem Satterfield, strong safety Marquis Knight and linebacker Aaron Moul — and seeks to end the season on a five-game winning streak.
“We always want to send our seniors out with a victory,” SRU coach George Mihalik said.
But this one won’t come easily.
Bloomsburg (9-1) is ranked fourth in the region and may need a win Saturday to secure a spot in the upcoming NCAA Division II playoffs. The Huskies’ lone loss is a 49-42 decision to PSAC East champion Shippensburg.
“A loss Saturday and I don’t think we can get in,” Bloomsburg coach Danny Hale said. “We certainly can’t expect to.”
Mihalik disagrees.
“I think they’re in no matter what the outcome of this game is. They have the body of work already,” he said.
The Huskies need 276 yards rushing Saturday to break Millersville’s PSAC single-season team rushing record of 3,552 yards, set in 1984. Running back Franklyn Quiteh leads all of Division II this season with 1,739 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.
Quiteh needs 159 yards to become the second most prolific rusher in Bloomsburg history. Teammate Eddie Mateo has run for 960 yards this season. Both rushed for more than 1,000 yards last year, becoming the first PSAC teammates to rush for 1,000 yards each since 1999.
“The number 135 is on our mind this week,” Mihalik said. “Quiteh is No. 1 in the nation in rushing, Bloomsburg is No. 3 in rushing offense and No. 5 in the country in total offense.
“Our offense will have to score a lot of points for us to win. This isn’t going to be a 10-7 type of game.”
Bloomsburg has scored at least 14 points in 34 straight games, dating back to 2009.
“We’re a running team first,” Hale said. “But our run has done a good job of setting up the pass for us, too.”
Tim Kelly has completed 102 of 194 passes for 1,585 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.
The Rock will be without quarterback Nigel Barksdale — sidelined with a knee injury — as Jared Buck returns behind center. Buck has thrown for 576 yards and six touchdowns this year.
“Jared was our starting quarterback earlier in the season. We feel like we have two No. 1 guys at that position,” Mihalik said. “We can definitely win with him.”
Winning against Bloomsburg has not been happening for The Rock, however.
The teams haven’t met since 2005, but Bloomsburg has won the last eight games between the schools. SRU’s last win over the Huskies was an 18-7 decision in 1983.
Mihalik has never defeated Bloomsburg and Hale has never lost to SRU.
“This is a much different looking Slippery Rock team since the last time we faced them,” Hale said.
The Huskies feature an impact defense as well, led by Larry Webster’s 10 1/2 quarterback sacks. His father, also named Larry, enjoyed a lengthy NFL career and won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens.
Overall, Bloomsburg has 24 quarterback sacks and 22 takeaways this year.
“They are a physical team that creates turnovers and we’re still trying to figure out how to contain their running game,” Mihalik said. “That team is very, very good.
“They’re a nationally ranked (No. 12) opponent and knocking them off would keep our momentum going through the offseason. With a young team like ours, that’s important.”
