Bicyclist hurt in Rt. 8 crash
A 14-year-old boy riding a bicycle was injured Monday afternoon when a pickup truck struck him on Route 8 in northern Butler County, state police said.
The boy, who is from Grove City, was taken by ambulance to Grove City Medical Center following the crash about 3:25 p.m. just south of Whitaker Road in Mercer Township. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known, and his condition was not available.
Police said the teenager and the pickup, a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500, were both traveling south on Route 8. The bicycle was on the right shoulder.
Joyce J. Ledonne, 58, of Pole, Venango County, the driver, approached the bike and attempted to pass it on the left.
“When (the truck) began to overtake (the bike),” according to a police report, “(the boy) drove away from the shoulder and into the southbound lane of travel.”
The truck hit the bike, and the teen suffered head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. A Superior Ambulance crew tended to him before he was taken to the hospital.
The boy was alert and talking to medics, said Steve Bickel, chief of the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department. The bike and truck both sustained minor damage.
Traffic was reduced to one lane for about an hour, authorities said, to allow police to conduct their investigation.
The police report indicated the boy was at fault, but it was not known if he was cited. Ledonne was not charged.
