Teen plays flute for expert crowd

Kimberly Nutter

ZELIENOPLE — Kimberly Nutter has performed in front of crowds before, but never like the one she played in front of last Saturday.

Nutter, a seventh grader at Seneca Valley Middle School, performed at the 34th annual convention of the National Flute Association at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh.

The 13-year-old borough resident played twice, once in a trio during a tone workshop and another time on her own during a solo performance in an afternoon concert. During the solo, Nutter played "Pavane" by Camille Saint-Saens.

Nutter said she was given the chance to play after her flute teacher, Kathryn Blocki, asked her to perform at the four-day event that also included performances by professional flutists. But even with three years of experience, Nutter said the crowds at the convention were larger than any of her other audiences.

The size of the groups gathering for one of the tone workshops in which she performed, were also surprising, she said.

"It looked like maybe there were 100 chairs,"Nutter said.

The performance was just as exciting for Kimberly's parents.

Her parents, Mark and Ann Nutter, said the performance was a chance for their daughter to learn more about playing the flute from musicians from across the country while showing off what she had already learned.
