NEW YORK — With almost two weeks remaining, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby surpassed Jaromir Jagr's record for the most votes ever received by a player in NHL All-Star game fan balloting.

At noon EST on Sunday, Crosby passed the 1,020,736-vote mark that Jagr set in 2000 while with the Penguins.

Crosby's Penguins teammate Evgeni Malkin was also poised to top the record — as of the moment Crosby passed Jagr, Malkin was within 19,000 votes of doing the same.

Through Jan. 2, fans can vote online to select the starting lineups for the All-Star game, which will take place in Montreal on Jan. 25.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Angels have pulled their eight-year offer to Mark Teixeira and will no longer go after the first baseman.Team spokesman Tim Mead confirmed Sunday the Angels have withdrawn their offer. The team made its offer, reportedly worth about $160 million, during the winter meetings in Las Vegas earlier this month.The Red Sox said last week that they "are not going to be a factor" in signing the 28-year-old Maryland native. Washington and Baltimore have expressed interest in Teixeira.

CLEVELAND — LeBron James said he'll consider signing an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, well before he enters the free-agent market in 2010.James, under contract for two more seasons, can hit the free-agent market on July 1, 2010. There has long been speculation James will eventually end up in one of the NBA's larger markets — particularly with the New York Knicks.The Cavaliers (22-4) have the second-best record in the NBA.

DETROIT — Eastern Michigan has hired Ron English, making him the fifth black head football coach in major college football, a person familiar with the contract agreement told The Associated Press on Sunday.The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school hasn't announced its decision. Eastern Michigan scheduled a news conference for Monday.The other black coaches among the 119 teams in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision are Buffalo's Turner Gill, Miami's Randy Shannon, Houston's Kevin Sumlin and New Mexico's Mike Locksley.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The final official shot of 2008 was a tap-in birdie by Richard Sterne to win the South African Open in a playoff, capping his unlikely climb in the world rankings to be among 15 players Sunday earning a Masters invitation.Three players on two continents made one final push for the top 50 in the rankings to make the trip to Augusta National.Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland tied for third at the South African Open and will move up to No. 39, while Lin Wen-Tang of Taiwan tied for sixth in the Volvo Masters on the Asian Tour and will be No. 49.
