PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates activated catcher Ryan Doumit from the 60-day disabled list prior to Wednesday night's game against the Chicago Cubs.

Doumit had been on the disabled list since suffering a severely sprained left ankle on May 29 in a home plate collision during a game at Chicago.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Doumit and Michael McKenry will share time behind the plate.

The Pirates optioned catcher Eric Fryer to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room on the roster for Doumit.

STATE COLLEGE — It's back to work Thursday for the Penn State Nittany Lions when coach Joe Paterno whistles the first preseason practice into session.Fifteen starters return, though the spotlight in camp will fall squarely on the race for the starting quarterback job. JoePa has said the nod will likely go to either sophomore Rob Bolden or junior Matt McGloin, who split time behind center last year.Penn State hopes to rebound from an injury-marred, 7-6 campaign in 2010 that ended with a 37-24 loss to Florida in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1.The 2011 season will also mark the 46th season on the sideline for Paterno, major college football's winningest coach with 401 victories.

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms with free agent kicker Jeff Reed.Reed finished last season with the San Francisco 49ers after playing the majority of his first 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reed was released by the Steelers after nine games in which he converted 15 field goals in 22 attempts.

CHICAGO — Yankees star Alex Rodriguez will be interviewed by Major League Baseball as part of its investigation of his involvement in illegal poker games.Rodriguez also faced questions about his gambling habits in 2005, when the Daily News reported he attended games at an underground poker club in New York. The slugging third baseman later acknowledged “it wasn't the right thing to do,” and checked with MLB before holding a charity poker tournament the following year.

Former St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger tells ESPN.com he is retiring after 11 NFL seasons.Bulger was selected for the Pro Bowl twice and passed for 22,814 yards, 122 touchdowns and 93 interceptions.He passed for more than 3,800 yards three times, including a career-best 4,301 in 2006, the only season he played all 16 games.
