Master scores game-winner in OT to send Planets to 5th straight Penguins Cup final

CORAOPOLIS — Hampton had the shots and the momentum entering overtime — then Max Master's momentum gave Mars the shot it needed.

Master, the Planets' junior forward, corralled a faceoff, then spun and rifled a shot past Talbots goalie Cam Radna just 3:09 into the extra period for a 4-3 PIHL Class A semifinal victory at the Island Sports Complex.

“I did what I usually do,” Master said. “I get the puck, push forward and take a shot.”

The win sends Mars (19-2) to the Penguins Cup championship game against Quaker Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Consol Energy Center. The Quakers defeated Kittanning 7-1 in the preceding contest.

Saturday's game also marks the Planets' fifth consecutive trip to the finals, with championships coming the past three seasons.

The Talbots (13-5-2) had erased a 3-1 third-period deficit to pull even.

With 10:28 left in the period, Joey Vita rifled a shot near the faceoff circle that struck Mars goalie Christian Knapp, but deflected into the net.

Almost 2Z\x minutes later, Luke Leya scored the equalizer with seven seconds remaining on a power play.

Knapp make a pair of big saves with about 5:45 remaining to keep the game tied, but Hampton had taken control of the game.

The Planets, however, never relented.

“Hampton's a strong defensive team,” Mars coach Steve Meyers said. “They moved Leya back to defense, which was a great move, but I loved the way our guys battled back after we lost the lead.

“They kept fighting all night and that's all I can ask. They kept their composure. I told them, keep positive, keep positive, keep positive,” Meyers added.

Before overtime, Mars junior forward Austin Heakins also rallied the troops.

“The older guys know what this feels like,” Heakins said. “We went out and you could see it in the young guys' faces. We told them, ‘If you're afraid to lose, we'd lose,' but they kept their heads up.”

Hampton had a great shot 35 seconds into the 10-minute overtime period when Leya rushed down the right side with a pair of defenders in tow, but his shot was wide to the left.

Hampton jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Zack Kosick took passes from Leya and Vita with 9:50 left in the first period.

Heakins answered one minute later on a power-play opportunity when his shot inside the blue line found its way past Radna.

Hampton had a chance to take the lead minutes later thanks to a two-man advantage but couldn't break through.

When Robert Foley buried a shot on the right side of the net on a Heakins pass from the left side, Mars took a 2-1 lead with 10:25 left in the second period.

Ian Houk-Graves made it 3-1 on a power-play helper from Heakins when he moved unhindered toward the net, then shot past Radna with 5:11 left in the second, a lead that would hold up until the third period.

“The two-goal lead is the most dangerous lead in hockey,” Heakins said. “I told the guys the first goal (in the third period) would give someone the momentum.

“I told the guys to keep pushing and get the momentum back,” Heakins added.

Hampton was 0-for-4 on power plays until Leya scored in the closing seconds of the Talbots' fifth chance while Mars cashed in on two of its first three chances.

“The power play and the penalty killing is definitely a big part of our game,” Heakins noted.

“We work hard on that, at least a half hour every practice,” Meyers said. “That's where games are won or lost.”

Notes: Knapp made 23 saves while Radna had 12. ... Mars was limited to 16 shots, five coming in each of the first three periods, then the game-winner in overtime. Hampton had 12 shots in the first two period before posting 14 in the third period to come back.
