JACKSON TWP — Julia Scanlon, a senior instrumentalist at Seneca Valley High School, was awarded a scholarship from the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA).
The scholarships are given to three PMEA District 5 high school seniors who plan to major in music education in college.
Julia was recognized for her academic and musical achievements, her involvement in PMEA festivals throughout her high school career and her goals in the field of music education.
Julia plays alto saxophone. She is a member of the Seneca Valley instrumental program, participates in marching band, wind ensemble and jazz I. She has been selected repeatedly for PMEA District 5 Honors Band, PMEA District 5 Jazz Festival and PMEA District, Region and All State festivals.
She plans to attend Brigham Young University in the fall.
JACKSON TWP — The National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) chose Urvi Gupta, Sarah Johanknecht and Kelsie McElroy as 2016 Western and Central Pennsylvania and West Virginia Affiliate winners of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.The three Seneca Valley High School students were recognized for their computing-related aspirations, outstanding aptitudes and interest in information technology/computing.
BUTLER TWP — A Butler County Community College alumna has been published in a national literary anthology.Rhiannon Martin, a 2015 graduate with an associate degree in English, had her poem “Eliot Said April is the Cruelest Month ...” published in the 2015 edition of “Nota Bene,” the publication of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.Martin, 21, is from East Brady and graduated in 2013 from Karns City High School. She plans to pursue a bachelor's degree and hopes to work in editing or publishing.“It is very humbling to see such a personal poem of mine printed in such a prestigious publication,” Martin said. “This poem was not just an elegy, but a dramatic monologue; my means of personal catharsis in the face of a tragedy.”———ASHLAND, Ohio — Ryan Deemer of Connoquenessing became a member of Ashland University's Honor Society.Deemer is majoring in environmental science and geology.He is the son of Robert and Kelly Deemer of Connoquenessing and is a 2014 graduate of Butler High School.—–——BEREA, Ohio — Marissa Bedard and Kacey Faix, both of Cranberry Township, and Nicholas Traverso of Evans City were inducted into the Dayton C. Miller Honor Society at Baldwin Wallace University.Membership is granted to the top 100 students according to GPA and achieved by less than four percent of undergraduate students.Bedard is a graduate of Tolland High School and is majoring in music education.Faix is a graduate of Seneca Valley High School and is majoring in theater with a focus on acting and directing.Traverso is a graduate of Seneca Valley High School and is majoring in music and innovation and entrepreneurship.
