The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh placed three priests on academic leave in response to more complaints of sexual abuse by Catholic priests reported to the diocese after a recent state grand jury report revealed years of sexual abuse complaints against Pennsylvania priests.

The new allegations are against the Rev. John Bauer, 71, Rev. Bernard Costello, 81, and Rev. Hugh Lang, 87.

Only Bauer was previously named in the report. In a news release issued Friday, the diocese maintains that the former complaint “was not substantiated as child sexual abuse because the accuser stated that Father Bauer did not sexually abuse him.”

The report states that a male complained in 2013 that Bauer had wrestled with him and other boys and drove boys to a wrestling tournament in Ohio, and that the priest and another priest provided alcohol to the boys, which the whole group consumed while traveling to the tournament.

The report states that Bauer denied the alcohol allegation and agreed that they had wrestled in an innocent manner for exercise. The person who reported the behavior also maintained that there was “no genital contact” but said it was strange.

The new allegations against Bauer arrived Thursday, the diocese reports. They involve child sexual abuse in the early 1980s.

Bauer has been serving at several Greene County parishes including St. Ann in Waynesburg, St. Hugh in Carmichaels, St. Ignatius of Antioch in Bobtown, Our Lady of Consolation in Nemacolin, and St. Thomas in Clarksville.

Costello’s allegation arrived Aug. 22. He “completed his last assignment in 2011” at Mary, Mother of the Church in Charleroi. The accusation dates back to the 1960s.

Lang retired as pastor at St. Therese of Lisieux in Munhall in 2006. On Monday, allegations of Lang sexually abusing a minor in 2001 were reported to the diocese.

The Rev. Nicholas Vaskov, a media representative for the diocese, said in a phone interview Friday that the diocese has continued to receive one or two complaints about priests every day.

The only ones not included in the report are the three listed here, he said.

These three priests have denied their allegations, the release states. The complaints were reported to police.
