Theft suspect allegedly returns to scene of crime

A Butler man is accused of breaking into a city auto detailing business on Sunday night.

The suspect, Timothy J. Kovocovsky, 48, allegedly returned to the scene of the crime Monday night and tried to break in a second time, Butler police said.

But this time, the owners of Joe Nagel’s Custom Auto Cleaning on South Monroe Street were watching their business on video surveillance from home.

They spotted the suspect about 10:35 p.m. Monday wearing the same clothes he had on Sunday, investigators said.

By the time they called for police, an officer on patrol was already at the business. Kovocovsky ran off but his getaway route over nearby railroad tracks was blocked by a passing train.

He improvised, police said, and jumped into the waters of Sullivan Run. Once back on land he ran toward Kittanning Street.

Police suspect his brother, Matthew Kovocovsky, 42, of New Castle pulled over in a vehicle and picked him up.

However, a second city officer saw what was going on and stopped the vehicle at 11:10 p.m.

Police described Timothy Kovocovsky as “soaking wet” when they found him.

He admitted to breaking into the business Sunday and trying again Monday, according to a police report.

Investigators suspect he used a pry bar about 10:15 p.m. Sunday to force open the door of an equipment room and take unspecified property valued around $200.

He was placed in the Butler County Prison to await arraignment this morning on charges of trespass, possessing instruments of crime, theft and attempted theft.

Police, meanwhile, arrested Matthew Kovocovsky for suspicion of driving under the influence.
