Mother charged with leaving son home alone
A Middlesex Township woman is facing charges after police said she left her young son home alone while she spent two hours at a bar.
Melissa M. Ochvary, 35, was charged with a felony count of endangering the welfare of children following the Monday night incident.
Middlesex Township police said a person called the station around 9:40 p.m. saying Ochvary was drinking at a bar and she left her son, who was born in October 2022, home alone, and requested a welfare check on the child, according to an affidavit.
An officer went to her home around 9:52 p.m. and found no cars in the driveway, and didn’t see any children from the windows, but heard voices in the rear bedroom, according to the affidavit.
Ochvary’s boyfriend pulled into the driveway around 10:15 p.m. and Ochvary pulled in around 10:23 p.m., police said. She told the officer that her 3-year-old son was home alone, but he was fine and a neighbor had just checked in on him, according to the affidavit.
The officer said the boy was in a crib and appeared to be fine, but the neighbor told him she had been in bed for more than two hours and was never asked to watch the boy, according to the affidavit.
Ochvary told police she left her home at 8:30 or 8:40 p.m. and left the bar around 10 p.m., and she talked to her neighbor at 6 p.m. and she was supposed to watch the child, according to the affidavit.
