WEXFORD — It appeared overtime would be needed to decide Butler's boys lacrosse game at North Allegheny Friday night.

The Tigers had other ideas.

With the score tied at 14, NA mounted one final push in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter.

The Tigers' John Maus fed junior Michael Eck, who beat Butler goalie Alex Hill with five-tenths of a second left on the clock.

It was Eck's fourth score of the game and dealt Butler (7-1) its first loss of the season.

The Tigers (3-3) have alternated wins and losses through their first six games.

"Hopefully, this is a game we can build off of," said NA coach John Rullan.

Butler tied the game at 14 when Tyler Kotch tallied his eighth goal of the game with 15.5 seconds remaining.

The Tornado gained possession when a check by Nick Elliott jarred the ball loose from a Tigers player.

Patrick Hitchan then gathered in a pass and raced deep into NA territory before Butler coach Ed Swierczyk called a timeout with 25.8 seconds left.

"There was no doubt who we were trying to get the ball to," Swierczyk said. "You get it to the player you have confidence in. We had a lot of those players on the field, but Tyler was just on fire."

The Tigers' first lead of the game didn't come until Eck's goal with 7:38 left in the fourth period gave NA a 12-11 edge.

Soon after, the Tornado fell behind by two goals, but scores by Cody Conklin and Kotch pulled Butler even at 13.

North Allegheny grabbed a 14-13 lead on a score by Ryan Worsena, whose five goals led the Tigers, with 3:28 remaining.

Butler held a 6-3 lead in the second quarter and a 10-8 edge late in the third, but the Tigers came back in both instances.

They received goals from Maus, Worsena and Eck in a span of 2:12 of the second period that knotted the score at 6.

Butler's Zach Harrison scored late in the half to give the Tornado a 7-6 advantage at intermission.

Scores courtesy of Worsena and Jared Yon allowed the Tigers to tie the game at 10 entering the fourth period.

"I think a lot of our problems started with the faceoffs," said Swierczyk. "A lot of times, we were just too anxious and basically just gave them possession because of it."

Rullan saw an inspired effort in beating Butler.

"We've talked to our kids about finding heart," he said. "This was the first game this season in which we had that NA spirit."

Aside from Kotch's eight goals, the Tornado received three scores from Cody Conklin and one each from Cole Harvey, Harrison and Cody Bachman.

"We were able to do some good things on offense," said Swierczyk. "We spread the ball around well and exploited (NA's) weaknesses."

Dan Wiese added three goals for the Tigers.

Hill made eight saves for Butler, while NA's Anthony Ferraro stopped 11 shots, including five in the fourth quarter.
