Trooper suffers abrasion, uniform cut while serving warrant
A Butler state police trooper suffered an abrasion and his shirt, tie and glove were cut Tuesday, July 23, by a woman who brandished a knife while he assisted in serving a warrant for an involuntary mental health commitment, according to police.
Trooper Philip Treadway was dispatched to assist county Mental Health Department officials and an emergency medical service crew to serve Bethany Ann Scharding, 28, with a 302 warrant at a home on Dick Road in Connoquenessing Township, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Scharding was in her bedroom sitting on her bed with a blanket over her legs and right arm, police said. Treadway told her to show her hands and she eventually complied, and then told her she needed to go with the ambulance because of the 302 warrant and grabbed her left arm to take her into custody, police said.
Scharding then reached her right hand under the blanket, brandished a knife with a 9½-inch blade and slashed at Treadway, police said. The knife cut his uniform shirt in the abdomen area, his tie and left glove, and he had an abrasion on his upper left arm, police said.
Treadway took Scharding into custody with assistance from Aaron J. McAfee from the ambulance crew and was admitted to Independence Health System’s Butler Memorial Hospital under the warrant, police said.
Scharding was charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanors simple assault and reckless endangerment, and summary harassment and criminal mischief. Her preliminary hearing is pending.
