What is truly indispensable is philosophy, of which religion is a type. A person always has a guiding philosophy (implicit or explicit) which underlies their views on reality, knowledge, morality, politics, and art. Religion, as one example of a philosophy, posits a supernatural/mystical view of reality with knowledge accessible through faith (and thus not open to logic and reason). My underlying philosophical principles, segueing to answer Matthew from Chicora's questions, are based on the fact that reality exists and is knowable through reason, that a person should be the primary beneficiary of their own actions and consequently that the proper form of government is laissez-faire capitalism. Each law that a government passes should be judged as to whether it upholds or violates someone's rights (e.g. eminent domain laws are clear violations of property rights), as individual rights are the foundation of a proper government. First steps the government should take to return this country to its origin include: decreasing the size of government, decreasing the tax burden, dismantling the social welfare programs, and defending this country from its most imminent threat (Iran).
