Survey response integral to Chicora grant application

Chicora officials are distributing a survey to residents, the results of which will indicate the kind of grant money for which the borough is eligible.

Chicora councilwoman Mary Kay Summerville said the borough plans to apply for the Community Development Block Grant, which has to be submitted through Butler County for funding. The survey asks residents questions about their income and financial state, which Summerville said will be submitted anonymously if they are returned.

“The information will be tabulated to see if Chicora is eligible to receive state and federal resources,” Summerville said. “We're hoping to get a good response.”

The block grant program aims to avert adverse impacts on health, safety and the welfare of communities; and helps them to get on the right track to fiscal well-being, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

Summerville said Chicora has received money in the past from the Community Development Block Grant, and administrators plan to apply for next year’s funding. She said the survey will help determine not only how much money the borough is eligible for, but could help determine where money could be spent to help improve Chicora.

“We’re trying right now to receive a grant to replace some water lines and things,” Summerville said. “We can’t say exactly what we want yet; the survey is to see if we’re even eligible for a grant.”
