There are 6,837 fewer people registered to vote in Butler County than in November.
Regis Young, county elections director, on Wednesday told the county commissioners that county officials have been purging the registration roll since November's election.
Called a "five-year-purge," people who have not voted in the past five years and in two federal elections are removed from the list. Many of those are dead or have moved.
The county's total registration now is 114,952, including 44,421 Democrats and 57,293 Republicans.
Had officials known earlier about the purge change and the elimination of these voters, the county could have boasted an 80 percent turnout rate for the election.
Young said that would have been the best turnout in the state.
Instead, the county's turnout was lower, but still impressive, at 75 percent.
Young said voters should fulfill their civic duty to vote by a like percentage this year as the May primary will be for 632 offices in the county.
"That is one of the largest election year cycles," he said.
