In 1963, he moved to Maryland and worked at a gas station, where he met his future wife, Janet. In 1965, they married; and a few years later, they started a family in Fort Washington, Md., where they were members of the Providence Methodist Church.

In 1987, he and his wife built a home for their family in Waldorf. After 25 years, he retired from Bell Atlantic and worked at Sam's Club in Waldorf for seven years. In 1996, he was Employee of the Year at Sam's Club.
