Sunday — Robert Bryant Jr., 56, of Butler was arrested in Pittsburgh for allegedly stealing a mini-van Saturday afternoon in Butler.Bryant is accused of taking Paul Voelker's Plymouth Voyager parked in front of Hovis Auto Parts & Truck Supply on West Jefferson Street. Voelker of Butler told police he left the keys in his van to go inside the store to buy two fuses.He was in the store about five minutes, but when he returned his vehicle was gone. Police entered the stolen vehicle into the National Crime Information Center databank.City officers the next day learned Bryant had been arrested in Pittsburgh and the vehicle impounded at the police lot. The defendant, placed in the Allegheny County Jail, faces theft charges in Butler.1:17 a.m. Saturday — Robert Brophy, 28, of Center Township was arrested for driving under the influence on North Cedar Street. Police also cited Brophy for driving without a license, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and possession of drug paraphernalia.Oct. 26 — Police charged Ernest Seger, 51, of Clay Township with DUI stemming from an Oct. 13 crash in which his car hit a traffic light pole along West Cunningham Street. Seger was also cited for driving without insurance and careless driving.
5:07 p.m. Saturday — Two Slippery Rock University students were seriously injured when their speeding sport utility vehicle crashed on Route 173 in Slippery Rock Township.Sarah Ross, 20, and Christina Gillespie, 21, were flown by medical helicopter to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Their conditions were not known this morning; however, police described Gillespie's injuries as critical and Ross' as serious.Police said Ross was driving the SUV, owned by Gillespie's parents, of North Wales, Montgomery County, when she lost control of the vehicle while rounding a bend in the road. The vehicle hit and sheared off a utility pole, spun around and struck a large tree.Neither Ross nor Gillespie was wearing a seat belt. Police said their investigation continues.6:30 a.m. Saturday — A pickup truck driven by Edward Young, 48, of Evans City struck an embankment and rolled over on Brownsdale Road near Route 68 in Forward Township.Police said Young, who was not wearing a seat belt and suffered moderate injuries, fled the scene after the crash.2:26 a.m. Saturday — Atractor-trailer crash closed both northbound lanes on Interstate 79 in Cranberry Township for about 90 minutes.Police said Jaimie Mayhorn, 33, of Alliance, Ohio, lost control of his rig when the driver of a mini-van in front of him slammed on his brakes to avoid a deer on the highway. The tractor-trailer jack-knifed and hit a guardrail.1:45 a.m. Saturday — Two people were charged following a disturbance on North Road near Route 42 in Franklin Township.Kathy Jo Rensel, 43, of Butler was arrested and charged with theft for allegedly stealing $880 in currency from Richard Godot, 47, of Butler. Godot, in turn, was cited for harassment after allegedly hitting Rensel.Rensel was arraigned for theft and placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $1,000 bond.11 p.m. Friday — Earl Tiche, 62, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., was arrested for driving under the influence after a hit-and-run crash in Washington Township.Police said the crash at Branchton and Nagy roads occurred when Tiche's car hit the side of another car driven by Amber Ford, 17, of Harrisville. Tiche drove off after the wreck but was later found. In addition to DUI, he was cited for undisclosed traffic violations.9:37 p.m. Friday — A sport utility vehicle driven by Christopher Painter struck a deer on Route 422 in Clearfield Township.3 a.m. Friday — A pickup truck driven by Casey Riley, 20, of Bethel Park, Allegheny County, struck a guardrail and mailbox on a post along Crestview Road near Taggart Road in Slippery Rock Township. Police said Riley ran off after the crash, leaving the truck behind in a yard. He was later found and cited for undisclosed traffic violations.
