Tornado bowlers headed to states

The Butlers varsity girls bowling team is headed to the state championships Saturday at North Versailles.

The Golden Tornado placed third in last weekend's regional competition, trailing only Hempfield and Penn Hills. The top six teams from the Western Regional advance to the state tourney, as do the top six teams from the Eastern Regional.

Penn-Trafford, Baldwin and Erie McDowell are the other wester qualifiers.

Nicole Balk and team captain Hope Griffith won individual awards at the regional. Balk's 235 was the event's second-highest game while Griffith's 587 series (217-173-197) was the third highest.

The Tornado girls also won a team award by rolling the highest baker game with a 212.

The Seneca Valley varsity I team beat Shaler 5-4 in overtime Sunday in Game 1 of the playoff finals at Harmarville BladeRunners.Dylan Soller tallied two goals and an assist for the Raiders. Jamie Glockner, Bryan Byrd and Zach Hissam each had a goal in the win.Joe Lang was the winning goaltender.Seneca Valley defeated Hampton 8-3 Saturday to reach the best-of-three final round.
