Stephen Wilson
On Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, the skies were clear, VFR was in place and all flights were OT. Stephen B. “Steve” Wilson, an airplane mechanic, put down his toolbox and headed out on his final journey, surrounded by his family to bid him farewell.
Stephen was born June 2, 1942, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Oliver and Mary Jane (Foote) Wilson. His father was gone at war and didn’t meet him until three years old. Graduating from University High School in 1960, Steve attended Northrup Institute to study aircraft mechanics. He received his A&P license and then joined the Army in hopes of using his skills there — instead they made him a medic. He served on a missile site in Minnesota and then was sent to Germany where he enjoyed the food and beer. After leaving the Army, Steve worked as mechanic at various airlines during his career: Universal, Flying Tigers, Lake Central, Eastern, TWA, Allegheny and US AIR — retiring in 2001.
After marrying his farmgirl, Jean, they settled on the family farm in Slippery Rock. Steve attended New Covenant EP Church and volunteered in the making of apple butter and homemade soups. For many years, he videotaped Laurel football games. He was a member of Scott Township Volunteer Fire Department, helping in the maintenance of trucks and cooking in the kitchen for events. Steve had a good sense of humor and helpful manner. He was a great fan of auto racing, from Indy to dirt tracks and drag races. He dearly loved his grandchildren, was a willing babysitter, told them lots of stories and attended their activities when he could.
Left behind are his beloved wife of 57 years, Jean (Hull); son, Andrew (Joy); daughter-in-law, Tracy; sister, Carole Jean (Larry); sister-in-law, Sylvia Jane (Dan); and five grandchildren, Payton, Sidney, Adeline, Nolan and Delanie.
His son, Douglas, and his parents preceded him in death.
We will miss his instructions and mechanical abilities on the farm. Most of all we will miss his love, wit and wisdom. Fair skies, dear departed Stephen.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Shadyside and Select Specialty Hospital in Boardman, Ohio for taking such good care of him in his final days.
WILSON — Per his wishes, there will be no services for Stephen B. “Steve” Wilson, who died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, but a remembrance party will be held at the farm later.
Arrangements entrusted to SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Slippery Rock.
