High-speed chase, crash leads to charges for Butler man

A Butler man is accused of leading a high-speed police chase that ended when he crashed into a barn last month, according to documents filed Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Richard D. Wissinger, 34, was charged with felony eluding police; misdemeanors drug possession, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and accidents involving property damage; and several traffic citations following the pursuit on Jan. 8.

Butler Township police said they were dispatched at 8:30 p.m. for reports of a man slumped over the wheel of a white Ford F-150 that was still running.

The truck was found in the Walmart parking lot, and documents showed a hypodermic needle was seen next to the driver on the center console. The driver was later identified as Wissinger.

Wissinger was startled awake by police knocking on the truck window, and documents show he then drove the vehicle over a grass median and sped toward North Duffy Road.

Police said they pursued Wissinger’s truck after it turned left onto North Duffy Road, watching him swerve into the opposite lane to pass other vehicles.

Before the intersection of North Duffy and Mercer roads, police said Wissinger drove his truck into a yard, eventually emerging on Mercer Road heading toward Route 8. Wissinger passed more vehicles by traveling in the opposite lane, and police said they lost sight of him while on Route 8 north and terminated pursuit.

Police were informed Wissinger’s truck struck another vehicle’s side mirror during the chase on Mercer Road. The other driver said the collision occurred as Wissinger swerved into the oncoming lane to pass him, according to documents.

Around 9:15 p.m., police said they received a report that Wissinger’s truck had crashed into a barn on Grendel Road in Prospect. It appeared Wissinger’s truck left the road, went over a hill and struck the barn, but he was nowhere to be found, police said.

Wissinger’s wallet and driver’s license were found in the truck, along with two empty stamp bags and a hypodermic needle, police said.

According to court documents, Wissinger has not yet been arrested and a preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.
