Summit Township supervisors re-up health insurance

SUMMIT TWP — Supervisors voted at a meeting Wednesday evening, Feb. 7, to renew their contract with UPMC for health insurance plans for the year, which has increased a little more than nine percent from the previous year.

Township secretary Roxann Stickney said she is the only township employee who has a full health plan, while the three supervisors have supplemental health insurance through the township plan.

“Actually 9.2% is good, unfortunately,” said Supervisor Richard Green.

The supervisors also discussed having a cleanup day in Summit Township, but tabled action on the subject because of potential issues that could arise with bringing a dumpster to the township for people to discard items in.

Supervisor chairman Willie Adams said he would like to provide an opportunity for large-item disposal in the township, but people may abuse the chance and get rid of items not permitted. The supervisors said in addition to being unsure if electronics would be allowed to be discarded, people may throw out items such as refrigerators, tires and paint, which could be an issue for officials.

“If someone comes at night and throws some tires in, we’d have to take them out, then we’re stuck getting rid of them,” Adams said. “I’d kind of like to do it, but I’d hate to do it and wind up with all kinds of problems.”

The supervisors also voted to pursue court proceedings on two properties — one on East Butler Road and the other on Portman Road — for not complying with township regulations. Stickney said the township is receiving complaints about both properties indicating they are becoming a public nuisance.

“The East Butler property, it’s having issues. The property owner was supposed to have installed a fence by the end of September and he didn’t,” Stickney said. “It’s just becoming a nuisance, people are complaining about it ... The property owner is not following through on the cleanup.”

Stickney said the situation was similar for the Portman Road property.
