Betty Young
Betty Jean Young, 97, of Harmony, passed away on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024. A memorial service will be held beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at the Grace Church of Harmony. A private burial was held by Betty’s family at the Grace Church Cemetery, in Harmony.
Betty was born on Feb. 11, 1926, to Lizzie Marie Heberling and Clarence W. Heberling. Betty Jean spent her childhood years at the side of her younger sisters, Ruth Goehring and Olive Marie Davidson in Harmony.
In 1948, Betty married the love of her life, Merle Dean Young. The two had one child together, Craig Dean Young.
In 1971, Betty’s first grandchild, Richard Patrick Young, was born. A second grandchild, Jason Allen Young, was born in 1973. Her third and final grandchild, Heather Ann Young, was born in 1981. In 1973, Betty left her hometown of Harmony and moved to Scottsboro, Ala., with her husband, where they remained for 17 years.
In 1990, Betty and Merle moved back to Harmony, and built their home on the same land where Betty grew up. In 1992, Merle lost his battle with cancer. Betty remained in their home living independently until her death. Even cleaning walls on a ladder until a few months ago. Betty spent her days attending Grace Church of Harmony, sewing, gardening and speaking of God’s unending love. Our lives will always be rich because of her presence in it. Although the number of years doesn’t seem near enough for us, we will always have our great memories.
She was an instrumental part of Harmony for many years and will be missed greatly. Betty’s grandchildren would like to thank the town of Harmony and its residents for their unending love for their grandmother. We always knew she was loved, but the outpouring from Pastor Pete; Mary and Bob Watson; Ken Lockey; Vicki and Larry Ierardo; Alecia, Mickey, Tyler and Avery Flood; Kathy and Frank Luke, Denny and Leslie Auld; Esther Zeigler; and the entire community has been overwhelming. Thank you for loving her, for keeping her safe, and for helping to allow her to remain in her home all these years.
We are sad that she is gone, but rejoicing in the fact that her wish, to see Jesus, her grandchildren and her other family members who went before her, has been granted.
Betty is survived by her grandson, Richard Patrick Young; granddaughter, Heather Young Dohring; great-grandchildren, Brittany Young Robinson, Madison Taylor Garner, Hunter Patrick Bradley and Autumn Ryleigh Garner; one great-great-grandchild, Tavon Lane McCurdy; bonus grandchildren, Emily Wernicke and Bobbie Watson; special niece, Debbie Patinski; sister, Ruth Goehring; nieces and nephews, Kathy (Gary) Peffer and Marcia Hodge, Scott (Diane) Davidson, Norman (Carol) Young, Bob (Alda) Young, Gary Householder, Randy (Diane) Householder, Nancy (Neal) Rubin and Melanie (Bill) Buzzard; daughter-in-law, Becky Wininger; and best friend, Beverly Barclay.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Young; son, Craig Young; grandson, Jason Young; great-granddaughter, Savannah Young; parents, Lizzie Marie Erb Heberling and Clarence W. Heberling; grandparents, John A. Heberling, Mary A. Scott, John L. Erb and Martha Moyer; and sister, Olive Marie Davidson.
