Butler Catholic students were dazzled by a Chinese acrobatic troupe with its feats of balance, agility and skill during an assembly Thursday afternoon.

During a 45-minute show in the school's gym, four gymnasts balanced various objects like fans, bottles and ceramic pots on their heads, did back flips and jumped through ropes. Some of the those things were done simultaneously.

“It's things we do to enrich the curriculum,” said Barb Walls, a third-grade teacher at Butler Catholic School.

Carson Laconi and Bridget Feczko, both 10-year-old fourth graders, said their favorite part of the show was when one of the teenage acrobats balanced a tray of cups on her head while climbing up ladders and waving streamers.

Using one lit candle, the same acrobat lit another while balancing both on her face. She was the youngest in the group, at only 16 years old.

Teachers will incorporate the performance into their lessons in the coming school days. Some classes will be learning more about Chinese culture, through learning Chinese calligraphy and lifestyles. Other classes will be learning the physics of some of the acrobatic moves they witnessed during the assembly. The four-person group is part of the Yinchuan Acrobatic Troupe; Yinchuan is a Chinese city made up of more than 1.2 million people. The acrobats who performed, ranging in age from 16 to 22, began training by the time they were 7 or 8 years old. The group is visiting more than 150 schools during an eight-month American tour. They came to Butler Catholic through the Bureau of Lectures and Concert Artists program.Butler Catholic School has about 220 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
