Moniteau put together in 66-24 win over Sewickley Academy
CHERRY TWP — Approaching a two-game test that coach Dee Arblaster deems to be major, Moniteau’s girls hoops team appears to be a well-oiled machine.
The Warriors’ Catherine Kelly scored more than Sewickley Academy’s entire output in under a half of play Friday night and her team caged the Panthers on the other end, resulting in a 66-24 home win.
Counting a 59-12 victory over Northgate the night before, Moniteau (10-1) will go into Wednesday’s battle with Redbank Valley having won outscored its last two opponents by a combined 125-36 count. They’ll play nearby rival Karns City two days after that.
Despite the recent lopsided scoreboards, Arblaster believes her team can take a thing or two away from the positive outcomes.
“Any kind of playing time you can get is going to be good,” she said. “Seeing different teams that we haven’t seen before. ... It’s good to see other teams and see how they operate — and for us to watch the game film back through. See what we can do better, see what we can change, something we can use of theirs that might work for us.”
Kelly finished with 30 points, two steals, and two assists; while fellow senior Kendall Sankey had a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double. Half of Sankey’s boards came on the offensive end.
“Balanced scoring is crucial for us — and Kendall coming up big on the boards,” Arblaster said. “She’s taken it upon herself to play a bigger role that way.”
Opportunities were also created by the 25 total turnovers the Warriors forced. The hosts bucketed 11 points off takeaways in the first frame alone.
“We’re very young,” Sewickley Academy coach Jill Capozzi said. “We’re not the greatest of passers, so we give up a lot of live balls.”
The Panthers (3-3) were without their injured leading scorer, Libby Eannarino. They connected on just one field goal in the second half, that with just five seconds left to play. Sewickley Academy shot 7-of-34 (20.5%) on the night.
“That was a goal,” Arblaster said. “I don’t want to run the score up, but we have two games coming up. So, we’ve got to play good basketball. I even told my girls that went in, ‘If you go in there and play crappy basketball, you’re coming back out.’”
Meanwhile, Moniteau went 28-for-49 (57.1%) from the floor — an accurate shooting night boosted by crisp passing and quick transitional play.
“They’re very unselfish, and sometimes we pass up shots when we shouldn’t,” Arblaster said. “They always look (for) one more, look for the best opportunity — and that’ll go a long way for us.”
