New school position in works

ADAMS TWP — If the $43.5 million preliminary 2014-15 Mars School District budget is passed next month, a second assistant superintendent will be hired.

Superintendent Jim Budzilek said at Tuesday night’s board meeting that the new administrator’s title would be assistant superintendent/director of curriculum for elementary education.

Currently, Matt Friedman is the assistant superintendent/director of curriculum for grades kindergarten through 12. The new position would change Friedman’s title to assistant superintendent/director of curriculum for secondary education.

“As the district continues to grow, we want to maintain a strong focus on both the elementary and secondary levels,” Budzilek said.

He said the salary of the new position is not yet certain because a candidate has not been selected.

Budzilek said many avenues will be explored in hiring the new administrator, including the potential promotion of an internal candidate.

The new administrator will be hired this summer, Budzilek said.

The school board at last week’s meeting passed the preliminary budget with no tax increase.

Also on Tuesday night, the board approved buying textbooks for $427,000.

Friedman told the board that textbooks for grades kindergarten through five, literature anthologies from grades six through 12, English textbooks, film studies books, and communications in journalism materials will be bought.

Friedman said eighth-grade science and language arts books as well as a set of novels were not included in the order because he is still negotiating the price.

The textbooks bought will not need to be reordered for six years, Friedman said.
