Waterpark gets sun decks
CRANBERRY TWP — Visitors to the township's North Boundary Road Waterpark this summer will notice some changes — new paint for the pool, some new personnel and two new sun decks the township hopes member families will take advantage of for get-togethers.
The sun decks, one on the hill and the second near the diving area, are 12 feet by 12 feet.
Parks and recreation director Mike Diehl said the areas will be available by reservation only and rented out for family get-togethers such as birthday parties and "adults that want to get out of the fray."
"We're envisioning it running much like the picnic shelters in the park," he said.
The rental fees for the decks have not been set as the township continues to shape how the inaugural year for the decks will run.
Attendance at the park increased to 81,729 last year, up from the previous year of 64,636.
Diehl said this year's membership sales have already surpassed last year during the same period by 12 percent.
The park is scheduled to open on Saturday.
"The water-park has been very successful due to the support of our guests," said township manager Jerry Andree. "The decks will provide another alternative opportunity for our guests to experience and enjoy this wonderful facility."
There will be a new face at the water-park since Conrad Pfeifer of New Sewickley Township, Beaver County, was recently hired to be the new manager.
Pfeifer, who previously owned Ocean Odyssey Dive Center, had previously run scuba classes at the pool.
A number of functional and cosmetic changes also were undertaken at the pool. Screening was added around the service windows in the concession area to better keep out insects and a new coat of paint was put on the pool's plaster walls.
The "poly coat" material has a 15-year warranty, Diehl said. The pool's surfaces had not been painted since the facility opened in the summer of 1997.
The township is looking to buy more time on replacing the plaster surfaces since officials plan within the next decade to possibly build a separate kiddie pool that would change the pool's configuration, he said.
