Stephen Cupps

Cupps

Stephen E. Cupps, 63, of Butler, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 24, 1960, in Butler, he was the son of the late Francis and Virginia (Shaffer) Cupps.

Stephen retired from AK Steel after 30 years of service. He was an avid fan of all Pittsburgh sports, and at times needed to be reminded he was not the coach. He loved his yearly trips to New York for salmon fishing, even though he never ate one in his life. He loved cars whether they were his own or NASCAR. After seeing a race in person, he loved to tell people that they needed to experience a live race to appreciate how fast the cars really go.

Growing up, he made many lifelong friends at Whippo Playground, which led to his love of softball and becoming a member of various teams. He was a proud player for the St. Paul Church League, which led to becoming league champions with a record of 29-5 in 1985. Playing softball for Cook’s Market at Franklin Field was a highlight of his younger years because many of his childhood friends were part of his team.

Steve was known for telling every doctor, at every visit, that he was “stronger than most men.” During his very long fight, he proved that he was actually stronger than all men.

Steve had a strong faith and was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler. He loved being outside, listening to the Pirates while grilling steaks for his family. He was a gardener as well as an expert grass cutter.

Steve is survived by his wife, Terry Garcia-Cupps; his children, Erik Cupps, Stephanie (Jared) Arienzo, Alyssa (Alexus) Garcia and Lydia (Rachel) Garcia; his sister, Nancy Cupps; his brother, Robert (Susan) Cupps; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his first wife, Lisa (Stevenson) Cupps.
