One store in Butler is stepping up to the plate for those who prefer a little green on theirs.

Since Friedman's Freshmarket closed its East Brady Street location earlier this month, some residents in the city of Butler — especially those that lack their own transportation — need to find a new way to shop for groceries.

Miller's Quality Meats has plans to accommodate these customers with some additional offerings, according to Justin Swan, the store's manager.

“We've always had a little bit of produce,” Swan said. “We're looking to open it up more.”

Swan said the store has already been working to expand its produce options.

“We've opened up the forum to customers as well,” he said. “We're just developing it more.”

Swan said the store doesn't have an overwhelming variety yet because he is still working on making the right connections. He said so far they have brought in a few new items, and it does have some of the basics — especially those that work well with their meat products — like mushrooms, onions and potatoes. He said the store has also been trying to prep the produce, so customers buy it ready-to-use.

“The produce complements the meat,” he said.

There's only a few established stores in downtown Butler that could fill the grocery void left behind by the closing of Friedman's, and so far other stores have yet to make any moves to expand.

Dollar General, which sells some canned vegetables, soups and other preserved foods, does not intend to develop a produce department for its downtown Butler location. But the issue could be reviewed later, according to its media relations department.

Ashley Flower, a senior manager of public relations for Rite Aid, said the company does not have any plans to add a new department to its downtown Butler location. The store does have some frozen ready-to-cook meals, canned soups and other microwaveable meals.

“It's kind of the grab and go convenience items,” she said.

Swan said he thinks a dynamic could form where people could get general items like canned foods, frozen foods and nonfood items from the other two stores while shopping for fresh items from Miller's.

“We'll leave the general grocery stuff to them,” he said.

Swan, who began managing Miller's a little more than a month ago, said the timing helped him pursue a goal quicker than he imagined.

“It's definitely an opportunity,” he said. “It's something I was planning on doing before Friedman's closed.”
