Students raise more than $18,000
EVANS CITY — The students at Evans City’s elementary and middle schools raised more than $18,000 earlier this month for cancer research by participating in a daylong walk around the school.
Called the STOMP Out Cancer Walk, more than 1,000 students and staff walked around the building at different times throughout the day to help raise the money.
Every cent raised from the event will go toward cancer research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
Since its inception eight years ago, the STOMP walk has raised more than $100,000 for cancer research.
Lorraine Scarpino is the retired teacher who oversees and coordinates each year’s event.
She said the event only gets bigger and better each year, which is why she has stayed on to organize it each year.
“It’s a monumental task to take on organizing the whole thing and I don’t mind doing it for such a worthy cause,” she said. “If it helps find more cures for cancer then it’s worth every minute I put into it.”
She said the STOMP walk is in memory of both Linda Saulle and Roy Waugaman, former staff members who both lost battles with cancer.
“This is in their honor and really for everybody who knows anybody affected by cancer,” she said. “The community as a whole really stepped up and deserves a pat on the back.”
She said the STOMP walk wouldn’t be a success every year without the “very generous and very supportive” effort of community members.
