Vacuum repairman charged in $14K fraud case

An Ohio contractor is accused of defrauding a company out of more than $14,000 by falsifying receipts from vacuum repairs, Middlesex Township police said.

Christopher L. Quinn, of Steubenville, Ohio, was charged Sept. 28 with three counts of felony theft and misdemeanor tampering with records after a business owner reported the thefts.

According to documents, Quinn was hired as a contracted repairman by a business that sells vacuum cleaners. The owner told police that the receipts Quinn would give him from repair jobs were discovered to be fraudulent.

Police said Quinn would turn in receipts to the business that did not reflect the work that was done for a customer. Receipts to the business would show no work was done and no parts were sold, while a customer’s receipt would show that work was done and parts were sold.

Documents show Quinn would keep cash customers gave him for repairs or have the customer write a check to him instead of the company.

Police said between December 2022 and April 2023, Quinn did this 125 times, accruing a total of $14,440 from the repairs.

His preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
